Site Search Engine

With literally hundreds of pages of data, some "buried" many layers deep through the various menus and links, it can be hard for you to conveniently find exactly what you're looking for here!

Help is at hand.  Simply put some words that describe what you are looking for into the search box below and you'll be given a list of any/all pages on the site that contain the words.

If you get too many pages returned, try using more specific words.  If you get no pages returned, then check your spelling (!) and try and think of other ways in which the subject you're looking for might be described.

There's some "geek level" detailed instructions below about how to use the logic of the search engine in case you're really interested.

Use the form below to search for documents in this web containing specific words or combinations of words. The text search engine will display a weighted list of matching documents, with better matches shown first. Each list item is a link to a matching document; if the document has a title it will be shown, otherwise only the document's file name is displayed.

What the Search Engine Can Not Do

Unfortunately, the search engine can only search the regular pages on this site.  It can not search some of the "clever" pages - currently this means that it can't search for words and definitions in the Glossary and neither can it search the Journal Article, the Links, or the "Today in Russian/Philatelic History" databases.  If you think what you are looking for might be in a glossary entry or as part of a Journal article, you should use the special search functions of those two parts of the site as well as the text search engine here.

If you still can't find what you're looking for....

Let me know.  Maybe I can help.  :)

Words to search for

Query Language

The text search engine allows queries to be formed from arbitrary Boolean expressions containing the keywords AND, OR, and NOT, and grouped with parentheses. For example:

information retrieval
finds documents containing 'information' or 'retrieval'

information or retrieval
same as above

information and retrieval
finds documents containing both 'information' and 'retrieval'

information not retrieval
finds documents containing 'information' but not 'retrieval'

(information not retrieval) and WAIS
finds documents containing 'WAIS', plus 'information' but not 'retrieval'

web*
finds documents containing words starting with 'web'
